Treatment Approaches & Clinical Interests

Ali approaches treatment from a trauma-informed psychodynamic systems perspective, specifically conceptualizing work based on individual, relational, and sociocultural factors significant to their lives and contexts. The elements of psychodynamic treatment that Ali follows consist of enhancing clients' knowledge and insight, utilizing empathy to provide new experiences for various individual needs and deficits in clients' lives, and lastly, building rapport with clients and authentically engaging in the therapeutic relationship. Ali employs this treatment model because it validates clients' current experiences and unique realities, which their perceptions and experiences have shaped. This way of treatment fosters an authentic therapeutic relationship between the client and the therapist, enhancing its effectiveness. Regarding trauma, Ali's conceptualization of clients' lives is informed by the Adaptive Information Processing model, which posits that the present impairment often results from experiences that were processed or unprocessed in maladaptive ways. Ali has a particular clinical interest in working with clients experiencing attachment and trauma-related issues. She is also interested in providing a variety of psychological assessments to supplement clinical observations and understanding of the whole person.

Education & Experience

Ali received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of California, Riverside and her Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology from Azusa Pacific University (APU). Ali is currently a 5th-year Doctoral Candidate working toward her Doctor of Psychology degree (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology from APU. She has completed training rotations for community mental health, public schools, university counseling, and psychiatric facilities for assessment and psychotherapy. Ali has also completed training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Play Therapy.

Faith and Spirituality

Ali's Catholic Christian identity informs her respect for the dignity and goodness of every person and her belief in their ability to flourish. She understands that individual and relational flourishing is essential to vocational flourishing and continues to foster virtues of humility, charity, and compassion within herself. Ali realizes that everyone experiences suffering and might not understand how to cope with or manage it. Her previous missionary experiences have enriched her desire to help alleviate others' suffering and help them make meaning out of complex life challenges. She recognizes how crucial it is for everyone to have someone to bear witness to their experiences through relationships. As a clinician of faith, Ali welcomes clients to share their religious, existential, and spiritual beliefs and traditions within therapy, such as spiritual functioning and desired relationship with God, and is willing to explore the possibility of integrating these essential factors within treatment.
